TAKE CARE and USE THE FUME CUPBOARD for all chemical handling, aggressive reagents and other agents to protect yourself and the environment inside the laboratory.
The fume cupboard can create the required satety if it is designed correctly and has efficient air exhaust system.
Look for design, airflow into fume hood, air exhaust at back and top of hood.
Any instrument, container of certain size placed inside fume hood must be elevated approx. 30 mm from worktop to allow flow of air to "wash" heavy fumes away from worktop and to avoid turbulences which will create contaminated air escaping to operator's respiratory zone.
FUME CUPBOARDS must be tested after installation in the laboratory and only when the instruments/containers needed for operation/particular procedures are placed inside hood (eventually elevated).
The test must be repeated each 6 month.
Fume cupboards should be designed for your purpose/relevant procedures to create maximum safety.
As operator of fume cupboard you must consider safety as first priority. Control function of exhaust system, clear the worktop for containers and any chemicals not to be used to avoid unintentional mixing of fumes which can create explosion etc.
The fume hoods have slots in inner black wall where any fume, heated air, turbulence in airflow are caught by the high speed air exhaust flow through the slots.
This means that contaminated air and related air turbulences are taken (caught) away immediately when created so that clean air in the operator's respiratory zone will not be affected or contaminated.
Many fume cupboards pretend to be safe for operator, but as your health is at rist better make sure your got the completely safe fume cupboard.
